Application of Micro-Light Wave Dryer in Pu'er Tea Production Area, Yunnan, China

In recent years, as health-conscious consumption becomes mainstream, Pu'er tea has gained strong market popularity for its unique aging value and health benefits. However, traditional Pu'er tea drying has long relied on natural sun-drying or coal-fired drying rooms. Sun-drying is highly weather-dependent; during the rainy season, fresh leaves pile up and cannot be processed in time, often leading to mold and sour odors. Coal-fired drying struggles with temperature control—high heat easily damages endogenous enzyme activity and aroma precursors, weakening the tea’s aging potential. How to ensure drying efficiency while preserving Pu'er’s active substances and aging potential has become a critical bottleneck for tea enterprises in the region.Against this backdrop, a medium-sized refined tea factory in Pu'er, Yunnan, approached us for a solution. Through on-site inspections and in-depth research into process requirements, we found the customer processes large volumes of fresh leaves daily and is highly sensitive to drying temperature: the entire process must not exceed 45°C to avoid inactivating endogenous enzymes, while moisture content needs to be uniformly reduced from 60% to below 10% for subsequent steaming and pressing. Our engineering team developed a customized solution and recommended an industrial micro-light wave drying unit.The equipment adopts micro-light wave heating technology, using specific wavelength light energy to penetrate tea leaves and directly excite internal water molecules to vibrate at high frequency and generate heat, achieving uniform volumetric drying from the inside out. Operating at a constant low temperature within the customer’s required range, it retains over 90% of tea endogenous enzyme activity, with almost no loss of flavor compounds such as tea polyphenols and catechins. Equipped with a built-in intelligent temperature and humidity interlocking control system, it automatically adjusts light wave power and dehumidification airflow speed based on real-time tea moisture content, ensuring a stable and controllable drying curve. The dried raw tea has intact, glossy dark strips and a fresh, clean aroma with no smoke. Laboratory tests show key active indicators outperform traditional sun-drying methods.Crucially, the entire drying line enables fully automated continuous operation—fresh leaves require no manual turning from feeding to discharging. Daily processing capacity is 5 times that of traditional drying yards, eliminating reliance on weather. Compared with coal-fired drying rooms, the micro-light wave dryer operates with zero emissions and no exhaust pollution, fully complying with green food processing standards.This micro-light wave drying unit delivers a high-efficiency, high-retention tea drying solution, meeting the customer’s dual demands for high yield and premium quality. It ensures every Pu'er tea cake has excellent aging potential and relieves tea farmers’ worries about rainy seasons. The equipment has operated stably for two tea seasons, with the customer expressing clear repurchase intent and plans to apply micro-light wave technology to its black tea and white tea production lines.
